IGN: Analyst Picks Sony To Win Console Wars

IGN.com reports, market research group Research and Markets predicts Sony to win the the new-gen console war. In their report “The Transforming Global Video Games Market: The Emergence of Next Generation Gaming” the firm predicts the PS3 to emerge on top in the console war based on current trends of growth in the industry:

“The group expects the PS3 to have an installed user base of around 75 million globally by the year 2010. While the study notes that both Sony and Nintendo offer unique products, Research and Markets still felt that Sony’s superior technology would give them the edge over the competition.

Although the group designated Sony as the future market leader this gen, they gave very little in the way of reasoning to back up this claim. The primary focus of the study was analyzing the impact of next-generation consoles on the online games sector, rather than determining the factors which might lead to dominance in the next-generation console market.”

EA Winter Preview: Def Jam Icon

The Def Jam series will take the jump to Xbox 360 and PS3 in March with Def Jam Icon and to this point still has the appearance of being another major improvement in the hip-hop fighting franchise.

The biggest change brought into Icon has to be the use interaction with the environments with the game’s soundtrack. As EA describes it, the beats in the game will trigger environmental hazards that players will have to avoid and use to their advantage throughout a battle. The idea is that timing one’s attacks to the music in the game should reap great reward in the ability to damage opponents.

The analog sticks are essentially used as a virtual turntable wherein players use scratches to alter the background music and to move forward and back into a song to gain an advantage. On top of that, the better one fights, the louder their particular song (each player picks a song to represent their fighter before the fight) gets louder and boosts their attacks. It pays to be familiar with the songs played, however if you’re not there is the option to import your own music into the game.
As for Icon’s single-player story, players will attempt play an aspiring hip-hop mogul attempting to become build his musical empire and become an icon. Along the way the path of fighting, players will discover new artists, manage their careers and release their hit songs.

Of course, one of the biggest selling points of the Def Jam series is the roster of hip-hop artists and Icon will bring the star power. Confirmed so-far are hip-hop’s top-selling artist of 2006 T.I., Big Boi of Outkast fame, Ludacris, The Game, and Paul Wall.

PS3 Demand Waning?

American Technology Research released a report today from which a 28 of a group of 52 surveyed stores still had PS3’s in stock while Nintendo Wiis were sold out. American Technology Research analyst Paul-Jon McNealy said that those stores with Sony’s new console in stock typically had them low single digit numbers. He also added that it’s too early to determine whether the most-expensive next-gen console is actually suffering a loss in demand, a conclusion that would take more time to monitor PS3 inventories.

Godfather Goes PS3 and Wii in March

We gave you a bit of an early look with today’s edition of DaddyGotGame’s Trailer Park, here’s a little more info on the EA’s plans to bring The Godfather to the PS3 and Wii this March as well as some screen shots.

Gamers can now taking on the roles as of either Enforcer or Operator on the to becoming Don of New York, each with their unique skill sets to develop over the course of a game. There are also new compounds for the rival families, contract hits and the ability to call in larger hit squads for tougher battles.

As seen in the trailer, The Nintendo Wii’s iteration, The Godfather Blackhand Edition, utilizes the Wii Remote and Nunchuk for what EA calls its “hyper-intuitive Blackhand control.” Essentially what this mean is the Wii Remote can be used for pinpoint accuracy when shooting and with the Nunchuck one can make body movements that control punches, grabs, headbutts, shoves, and attacks with mêlée weapons.

The PS3 will see The Godfather The Don’s Edition which will include The Corleone expansion pack which includes new gameplay and missions. New locals include a shipyard and rail yard and the SIXAXIS utilizes it’s sensors as you can shake it to shake up and push around your victims.

Both The Don’s Edition and Blackhand Edition are set to ship in March 2007.

PS3 Wins Digital Innovation Award

PC World reports that Digital Entertainment Group, designed to promote forms of digital entertainment, awarded the Playstation 3 with an Digital Innovation award for content source at an annual awards ceremony Monday “for its vision of transforming home entertainment into a single, connected box that encompasses online, digital, gaming, and Blu-ray Disc-based entertainment.

“The choice was an intriguing one-although indirectly it seems to give the nod to Blu-ray Disc, in fact, it was one of the most neutral options on the table short of overtly weighing in on the ugly next-gen format war by picking either one of Toshiba’s HD DVD players of one of the early Blu-ray Disc home theater players. (The DEG’s biggest acknowledgment of the format wars was its observation in opening remarks that ‘we’re no longer in a single-format environment.’)

“The Playstation 3 is so encompassing that it embraces more than just Blu-ray Disc-although it does that part quite well, and indeed it was those reasons the group cited as to why the PS3 claimed this award.”
